A New Generation of Builders Groomed for Success
Everyone knows that feeling of being a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.
Sometimes, it turns out, a square peg is exactly what the world needs.
And the North County Trade Tech High School is helping make that happen for hundreds of San Diego area students who are being prepared to excel in the building and construction trades.
The school addresses two issues at once: students needing alternative educational opportunities, and a building industry that has seen a hemorrhaging of skilled workers. The real-estate bust of 2008 saw skilled workers leave the building industry in droves. Many old-timers in the trade were concerned that there were no young apprentices learning the skills necessary to continue handing down the knowledge gained from elders. This issue is discussed on a national level.
While “reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic” are still taught, these future builders receive training on state-of-the-art equipment and labs. This includes one of the highest-rated robotics labs in the state.
A New Start
Scantech Graphics was recommended to North County Trade Tech High School by ID Studios, an interior design firm we have worked with in the past, to handle the school’s environmental graphics for the new facility they were opening. After sitting down with Trade Tech, we learned they wanted us to design the entire environmental graphics project.
If you visit their website, you’ll see that the emphasis is on the students. Images of students fill the site, page after page. We took that and turned it into a massive wall vinyl graphic featuring full-size images of students attending the school. A thank-you wall to donors was also envisioned and became reality with a helping hand from Scantech. Another addition was vinyl window graphics to help identify the school from the outside. School Principal Phil Lutgen gave us high marks when he saw the work: “They look great! LOVE IT! And you did a great job installing.”
We were happy to help bring this to fruition, as the issues this school address seem to us to be important and vital to our economy and San Diego’s ability to thrive as a community.
The school opened in September of 2008, just in time to train students who could fill the widening gap in skilled workers entering the field.
One outstanding feature of this school – a 99% graduation rate over the last 10 years. Few, if any, schools can match that statistic, so they must be doing something right.
When life gives you an opportunity to make a difference – grab it!
Any time we can help make a difference in the lives of children and the community, well, that’s the cherry on top of the cake for us. We love what we do, and we love that people who strive to make a difference turn to Scantech to help realize their design goals.
