Commemorating 300 Years of an Iconic San Diego Site

Working in the same location for many years gives you a unique perspective on the evolution of the landscape around you. Kearny Mesa has been Scantech’s home for the last 30 years and we’ve seen an ocean of change in that time.

The most challenging and rewarding project this year (2022) reflects this dramatically.

Alysse Cooper of Innovative Commercial Environments (ICE) referred us to ownership to handle the concept, design, fabrication and installation phases of a lobby wall project for Sunroad Centrum I.

This required extensive research, which we did online and by using the vast resources available at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park.

The challenge then became bringing all this history into a timeline wall designed to fit into the décor of the building’s lobby and not overwhelm with too much information.

The lobby exists in the iconic landmark office tower Sunroad Enterprises built in Kearny Mesa, along with the surrounding mixed-use development, on 40 acres next to the I-805.

This was built on the site of the old Convair and General Dynamics aerospace design and manufacturing facilities. Many still remember the sprawling building and parking lot that housed a multitude of San Diego workers in shifts running round the clock.

The site’s history can be researched as far back as the 1700s when much of Kearny Mesa was home to the Kumeyaay people.

With studious research, and specially commissioned drone photos created by photographer Stephen Whalen, our amazing design collaborator, Josh Veteo, came up with a stunning series of panels against a subtle wall mural backdrop, all in hues and shades of sky and ocean blue.

We used a variety of substrates including our newest High Definition Metal Prints, digitally-printed linen wallcovering, cut acrylic and metal letters.

With a unique blend of materials and close collaboration with Sunroad’s ownership were able to accomplish what we feel really tells the story of this iconic property.

Our clients seem to agree, as they informed us:
“It looks terrific!!! Came out better than I expected! You guys were really terrific – if Craig or I can ever be a reference, we are more than happy to assist” – Dan Feldman-Principal and Chairman Sunroad Enterprises
